PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome

Polycystic ovaries develop when the ovaries are stimulated to produce too many male hormones, this occurs when 1. there is too much LH secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, or 2. there is too much insulin circulating in the blood which can Imagestimulate sensitive ovaries.  Usually one can see mulitple immature follicles in the ovaries.  PCOS is a very common condition, and in some cases there are serious implications, especially in regards to fertility.  Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can greatly improve general health as well as improving chances of ovulation and conception.  Even if you are not trying to fall pregnant, TCM can help regulate the body to overcome the many symptoms...

- tiredness, sluggish after eating

- sore lumpy breasts

- bad skin (especially severe acne in puberty)

- foul bowel motions

- irregular periods, no periods (amenorrhoea), lumpy menstrual flow

- no ovulation (oligo-ovulation)

- thrush and itching

- aching joints

- overweight

- depression

- excessive hair growth (hirsutism)

- insulin resistance

- epilepsy & diabetes

- ultrasonographic  evidence of polycystic ovaries (multiple follicles)

- hormonal ratio imbalances between LH and FSH, and hyperandrogenism (too much/many androgens)

- all of which can lead to infertility (more than 70% of women with PCOS suffer anovulatory infertility).

Western medicine has one treatment option, and that is the OCP hormone therapy.

LSA - lifestyle advice...

Some steps can be taken to improve lifestyle factors, which will further improve the your health and the odds of conceiving.

- remove refined sugars from the diet, in both solid and liquid forms

- starchy refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, some cereals, etc) should be avoided, as the body turns these into sugar.

- cut out all soda drinks, make sure you dilute fruit juices by at least 75%, and remove any other drinks that are high in sugar.

 - good quality protein should be a major player in the diet, either in vegetarian forms or in organic lean meats.

- increase intake of fresh vegetables, and avoid fruits that have a high sugar content.

- increase whole grains such as oats, brown rice and whole wheat, and increase your daily fibre intake.

- avoid dairy products.

- cut out all caffeine and alcohol, and stop smoking.

- exercise, exercise, exercise. This is very important, ideally strive to loose at least 5kgs (if overweight) before trying to conceive.  Even if the weight is too difficult to shift, the excercise itself improves the body's cell capicity, and reduces insulin resistance.  Controlling obesity is one of the best ways to couter anovulation due to PCOS... technically speaking... an excess of fat cells decrease SHBG leading to more androgens...

Working with the above points, your chances of having a baby are greatly improved. Some women with PCOS have no difficulty falling pregnant, but for those who do it can be a very frustrating and depressing time, so don't be affraid to seek help.  Acupuncture and herbs have been used successfully in the treatment of PCOS, and there are some very specific treatment strategies for this condition.
